From 102 floors and 1,776 feet up, 30 immigrants were sworn in as the newest citizens of the United States today. This was the first naturalization ceremony held at the observatory at One World Trade Center. 29-year-old Khadijatul Rahman is one of the new Americans. Khadijatul — who @heislerphoto photographed here with her 6-year-old daughter Labeebah and newborn son Zavyaan — was born in Bangladesh and now lives in the Bronx. She listened as 2 speakers delivered poignant remarks about liberty, justice and the immigrant experience. Preet Bharara — who was fired as a United States Attorney by President Trump — delivered the keynote speech, invoking his father who once lived in a village without running water and settled in New Jersey more than 40 years ago. And Judge Robert Katzmann, who is Chief Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, swore the citizens in. “My father,” he said, “who experienced Nazi oppression when growing up, told me of the great feeling he had when he got to this country, of being free, of being able to walk on the sidewalks, of not having to fear being accosted because of his religion.” Visit the link in our profile to read more.
