Whom are ocean protection laws for? This little guy, for one. You’re looking inside a Coronado sea urchin’s mouth; it’s made of 5 calcified tooth-like plates. Swipe to meet a few of this creature’s neighbors, including a bright orange Garibaldi, the state fish of California; a striped shore crab, sitting on her eggs; a 2-spot octopus named Nala; a blackeye goby; and a mantis shrimp, which can see things humans can’t. All of these critters were found around Santa Catalina Island in California and photographed at the Catalina Island Marine Institute by @alex_krowiak and @kate.e.powell. In surrounding waters, the state has designated marine protected areas that help wildlife propagate. These specific creatures may not be affected by potential rule changes — but the #oceans don’t have walls. To the northwest of Catalina Island, the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary was designated by @NOAA in 1980 and later expanded by about 15 square miles. But in June, @NOAA posted a notice, calling for public comment on a review of 11 national marine sanctuaries and monuments that have been created or expanded since 2007. The review is part of President Trump’s strategy to encourage offshore energy exploration and production. What happens next?
