Markus Martin, seated, was among those hit on Saturday when James Alex Fields Jr. of Ohio drove a car into a crowd in #Charlottesville, Virginia. 19 others were injured, some of them critically, and Heather D. Heyer, a 32-year-old paralegal from Charlottesville, was killed. @edu_bayer took this photo of Markus yesterday at a vigil for Heather; the 2 had been close friends. In total, at least 34 people were wounded in the violent protests that stemmed from a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville. Yesterday, supporters of the white nationalists and the counterprotesters both criticized the response of law enforcement. In Charlottesville and beyond, people grappled with the blatant display of attitudes that many thought had been buried. Saturday’s events were perhaps the most visible manifestation to date of the evolution of the American far-right, a coalition of old and new white supremacist groups connected by social media and emboldened by the election of Donald Trump.
