Smashing things may not seem like a winning idea to wrap a business around. But since March, nearly 1,500 people have shown up to break housewares, electronics and furniture at the @wreckingclub, 2 reinforced rooms in a building in Manhattan’s garment district. After all, who needs a therapist when you can pay $30 to hurl crockery and shatter TV screens with bats and crowbars for 30 minutes? “Most people are hesitant at first,” said @wreckingclub’s owner, Tom Daly. “They’re a little timid. They say, ‘Can I break that?’ Usually after the first hit, they go crazy.” Perhaps it sounds unique, but @wreckingclub — where all smashable items are properly recycled — isn’t the first rage-based enterprise. Last fall, politics drove the business at @angerroom, which opened in Dallas in 2008. Clients showed up by the hundreds to batter effigies of both presidential candidates. And the Rage Room at @battlesportsinc, which first opened in Toronto in 2015, now has licensees in Budapest, Singapore, Australia and Britain. “We’ve helped a lot of angry couples,” said Stephen Shew, the owner. @dina_litovsky photographed @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reporter Penelope Green taking a metal bat to a television at @wreckingclub while on #nytassignment.
