Babulal Singh Neti is, in some ways, an unlikely harbinger of technological change. He lives in Taradand, a remote village in central India that, until recently, was largely cut off from the rest of the world. His parents pulled him out of school in 5th grade to marry a 10-year-old girl, and though he can read and write in Hindi, his school transcript brands him illiterate. While India produces some of the world’s best coders and computer engineers, vast multitudes of its people are like Babulal’s neighbors, entering the virtual world with little sense of what lies within it, or how it could be of use to them. But today, Babulal, 38, spends a lot of time online. Since acquiring a smartphone, he hasn’t been able to stop Googling things. He stops periodically to take selfies and post them on Facebook. And he describes his smartphone as his “best friend,” or his “guru.” Babulal took a job with an NGO whose goals include helping villagers produce and call up online content in their native languages. When he comes across internet skeptics, he tries to impress them by looking up something they care about. “I cannot answer the question of who created the earth. But I believe Google contains the answer,” he said. @lokeatul took this photo of Babulal recording a folk song to upload online. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
