Every artist has a story. George Anthony Morton wants his to be about where he is going: the @florenceacademyofart, in Italy, where he’ll attend a 6-week workshop starting in July. He’ll be the only student from the academy’s American branch, the @florenceacademyofartus. But that’s not as unusual as the part of his story that he doesn’t want dominating the conversation, the part about where he has been, which is federal prison. @artbygamorton served 9 years and 6 months of an 11-year sentence after pleading guilty to a drug charge in Missouri, where he grew up. “All my 20s,” said the 33-year-old, who now lives in Jersey City. The #artist is well aware that when he completes his studies in December, he’ll be the first African-American to graduate from the @florenceacademyofartus. “To be an artist, to be an American artist, to be an African-American artist — I don’t take it lightly,” he said. @jbrightphoto took this portrait of @artbygamorton in his studio space in Jersey City.
