Zoo visitors and Panda Cam viewers may be wondering why Mei Xiang appears restless this week. Our panda experts have the answer: breeding season has arrived! Keepers have been monitoring Mei Xiang’s behaviors, including physical changes, scent marking, pacing, and showing less interest in food and training sessions. In the past couple of days, it has become clear that she is approaching estrus—the very short window when she is able to conceive a cub. Tian Tian watches Mei Xiang through the mesh and vocalizes at her, but so far she hasn’t responded to him. When she starts to do affiliative behaviors—“chirping” at Tian Tian, backing up toward the mesh and raising her tail—we’ll know she’s ready to breed!
