A scimitar-horned oryx calf joined our herd at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute May 15! The calf will nurse from its mother for about six months. Keepers and veterinarians will perform a neonate exam in the coming days to determine if the calf is male or female and check its health. Scimitar-horned oryx were extinct in the wild until reintroductions led by the Environment Agency—Abu Dhabi and the government of Chad began in 2016. Thirty-seven oryx have been reintroduced so far. Our scientists and Zoological Society of London scientists are monitoring the oryx with satellite collars. The Sahara Conservation Fund is monitoring the oryx in-person in Chad. #EndangeredSpeciesDay
