?We welcomed two loggerhead shrikes April 4 at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute! Loggerhead shrikes are also called butcher birds, because they impale their prey on thorns and barbed wire. They were once common across North America, but have completely disappeared from parts of their range, like New England. There may only be about 100 left in Virginia. Our scientists are studying what is causing the decline. During the past several years, shrikes that have been born at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology have been sent to Canada to be released to the wild and hopefully help the population rebound. #EndangeredSpeciesDay
