?There are many species of migratory birds that spend their summers around the Zoo but winter in Central and South America. Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center scientists track and study migratory birds, including species that can be found around the Zoo. When banding birds, scientists weigh them, measure them, put tiny colored bands marked with identifying numbers around their legs, check their fat reserves, inspect their feathers and then release the birds. If they see a bird again, they can identify it using the band and compare data. Some of the species banded on International Migratory #BirdDay were the white-throated sparrow, white-crowned sparrow, Carolina chickadee and cat bird. #WeSaveSpecies #Ornithology
