?We welcomed a critically endangered Przewalski’s horse May 9! The filly and mom Maja are both doing well. The Przewalski’s horse is the last truly wild species of horse. It diverged from a common ancestor of domestic horses 500,000 years ago. In the 1960s the species went extinct in the wild, but as the result of breeding efforts in zoos it was saved from complete extinction. All of the Przewalski’s horses alive today are descended from 14 founding individuals. Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute ecologists are working with China’s Xingjiang Forestry Department and Hustai Nuru National Park in Mongolia to return horses to the wild. Our scientists track reintroduced horses via satellite collars. #EndangeredSpeciesDay
