Mohammed Ibrahim of the Terra Defenders took a selfie with a fan’s phone during a cricket match at the Kabul International Cricket Ground in Afghanistan. When @ニューヨーク・タイムズ journalists attended to watch the final of a local league, they were joined by a crowd of roughly 300. Cricket’s rapid rise in Afghanistan has produced a devoted fan base. The kids at the game weren’t just cricket fans — they’re fanatics, commentator-mimics and encyclopedias of often-imagined trivia about their favorite players. Some walked for 2 hours; others paid 30 cents for a bus ride. Some of them left home in their faded blue uniforms, backpacks and all, but skipped school rather than risk missing anything. For hours, they remained intent on every play, almost immediately returning to the railing each time they were chased up the stands by a Taser-carrying guard. @andrewquilty photographed cricket fans and players for a story about the remarkable rise of #cricket in Afghanistan, where the first team was born more than a decade ago when players returned home from a refugee camp in Pakistan. Now Afghanistan’s team consistently ranks in the world’s top 10. Visit the link in our profile to learn more about their journey. #?
