For reasons that have to do with history and culture, Polish #climbers have earned reputations as the greatest climbers of the Himalayas in winter. After World War II, the Communists imposed a controlling regime. But the mountains offered freedom from all that, and Poland’s climbing clubs swelled with members. Since then, generations of Poles have flocked like homing pigeons to the dark and jagged peaks of the Tatra Mountains, which rise on Poland’s southern border with Slovakia. When the photographer @maxwhittaker took this photo, @kacpertekieli was nearing a summit in the mountains, where many climbers build their skill. At 32, @kacpertekieli has built a considerable mountaineering reputation, although he can’t afford to quit his job as a barista in the old quarter of Krakow. He could join the elite 4 who summit K2 in winter, but after he watched a friend slip to his death last year in the Himalayas, he’s not sure he needs K2. Only the most experienced climbers attempt ascents, and for every 4 who crawl to its peak, 1 dies. Still, that mountain, mythical and moody and deadly, once consumed @kacpertekieli. “I was captivated,” he told @nytimessports. “I knew the Polish specialty is suffering.” Visit the link in our profile to see more photos by @maxwhittaker, a skilled climber himself, and to read more about the K2 ascent.
