In March, the photographer @Minzayar_Oo captured these #hotairballoons flying over the temples of Bagan, in central Myanmar. (Swipe left to see more photos.) The city’s monument complex is a crown jewel in a tourism sector that has grown rapidly since #Myanmar began a rocky transition toward democracy in 2011. Now, the country’s new civilian government is planning a United Nations World Heritage bid for Bagan. Many of its monuments were restored by the former military government in the 1990s in a way that experts called heavy-handed. The government abandoned an effort at the time to seek #WorldHeritage status. Experts say that because an earthquake last year damaged 389 of Bagan’s monuments — and much of the military’s worst construction work — the new bid has a chance of succeeding. But locals worry that officials with ties to wealthy developers could interfere with religious life or push zoning changes that would further impoverish them. And they say that not rebuilding the spires would make the monuments less attractive and depress domestic tourism. “World heritage? No one cares about that,” said a local vendor, Daw Soe Moe Thue. “We just need to survive.”
