Only after Tamiko Walker’s son got a scholarship from the John M. McKay voucher program in Florida did she learn that he had lost his protections under the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. “I don’t understand why,” said Tamiko, whose son has a speech and language disability. For many parents with disabled children in public school systems, the lure of the private school voucher is strong. But when it doesn’t work out, some parents learn a hard lesson: By accepting the vouchers, they may have waived their rights to the very support services for their children they were hoping to gain. @scottymacphoto photographed Tamiko and her son outside their home in Florida. Today, the boy attends the Virtual Schools of Excellence. A few times a week, he visits a local “learning center,” where contractors give him speech and occupational therapy. He completes the rest of his instruction online, at home. “We’re happy to the point where he’s safe,” Tamiko said. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
