The photographer @danielberehulak has been awarded the #PulitzerPrize for breaking news photography for his #nytassignment photos documenting the brutal antidrug campaign that President Rodrigo Duterte began when he took office in the Philippines last June. Over a span of 35 days, #DanielBerehulak photographed 57 murder victims at 41 homicides at 41 crime scenes where drug users and dealers had been murdered by vigilantes emboldened by President Duterte’s mandate: “kill them all.” For a photographer who has worked in 60 countries, covered wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and spent much of 2014 living inside West Africa’s Ebola zone, a place gripped by fear and death, it “felt like a new level of ruthlessness,” he wrote last year. Today, @danielberehulak spoke to the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ #LensBlog. “This is a story that isn’t going away,” the 41-year-old freelance photographer said. “So it’s important that the story is recognized and attention is paid to what is happening right now in the Philippines.” Visit the link in our profile to see the full story — which includes graphic images — and to read more about this year’s @pulitzerprizes.
