“Word gets around when the circus comes to town, don’t it?” — Cormac McCarthy ? The @ringlingbros circus has been around since 1871, back when Prussia was still a kingdom and Jesse James was robbing banks. It survived the Depression, 2 world wars, and various types of new media, including including radio, film and television. But on May 21, the world’s most historic circus will shut down after failing to sufficiently dazzle the children of the smartphone age and overcome the fierce opposition of the animal rights movement. @nytmills, a @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer who recently spent a couple of days with the #circus, photographed an aerial acrobat performing contortions in a planet-like orb during a production of “Out of This World.” Visit the link in our profile to read more about a 146-year-old circus ambling toward its final farewell.
