For much of their 21-month courtship, Jehan Mouhsen and Khaled Almilaji, who both grew up in Syria, lived apart. She studied medicine in Montenegro. Khaled, a Syrian physician well known among humanitarian-aid workers, was in Turkey, saving lives, he said, by supporting doctors in the Syrian conflict zone. They married in July, and in August they settled in Rhode Island, where he’d received a scholarship for a master’s degree in public health at @brownu, studying on a student visa. But now, Khaled, 35, is stranded in Turkey, near the Syrian border. His return visa was not honored. Jehan, meanwhile, is studying for her medical board exams and wrestling with morning sickness. The 26-year-old is pregnant. “He tells me to eat fruits and vegetables, take care of me and the baby,” she said of her husband. He said: “I’ve been arrested, and I’ve been tortured and everything. But my wife, she doesn’t have to suffer this.” @damonwinter photographed Jehan as she spoke to Khaled over video chat.
