Our staff photographer Tyler Hicks photographed these 2 girls posing for a photo at the Peace Garden park in Mogadishu, Somalia. This week, #Somalia is holding an innovative, closely watched presidential election that @unitednations officials have called a “milestone.” But many say it’s turned out to be one of the most fraudulent political events in the country’s history. And that’s saying something. Somalia has languished without a functioning central government for more than 25 years. Warlords starve their own people. The Shabab militant group has slaughtered hundreds of innocents across East Africa. And Somalia’s 21st-century pirates hijacked global trade with a bunch of scruffy skiffs. Now, President @ドナルド・トランプ has made Somalia one of the 7 countries under his travel ban, and some aid workers and diplomats fear that he could slash American aid. Many experts believe that would only destabilize the country further — at the same time as it could be headed into another famine. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
