It happened one night in the late summer of 1954. Jules Schulback heard that Marilyn Monroe would be on New York’s Upper East Side filming scenes for “The Seven Year Itch.” In one scene that would later become famous, Marilyn paused over a grate to enjoy the breeze from the subway on a hot summer night. (It was actually quite chilly.) As her dress blew up over her head, hundreds of gawkers yelled things like, “Higher! Higher!” Jules, who filmed the scene from afar, was one of the people watching. Another was her husband, Joe DiMaggio. Later that night the couple fought. The next morning, Marilyn's hairdresser covered up her bruises. And 3 weeks later, she filed for divorce. The scene became known as “the shot seen around the world,” but the New York shoot is said to have been a publicity stunt. Jules’s granddaughter, Bonnie Siegle, found his lost footage — shot in crisp, colorful Kodachrome. @ryanchristopherjones photographed Bonnie zeroing in on #MarilynMonroe with a photographer’s loupe. Watch our #InstagramStory to see some of Jules’s film footage.
