@caitlin_oh photographed Nina Chaubal, right, and her wife, Greta Martela, in Phoenix just after Nina was released from immigration prison last month. The pair had decided to drive through Arizona on their their way from San Diego to Chicago. Along the way, Nina, an Indian national with an invalid work visa, fell into the hands of the Border Patrol. The 25-year-old wasn’t worried about deportation when she arrived at a privately run immigration jail 80 miles southeast of Phoenix. But as a transgender woman, she said she was afraid of what could happen to her while in custody. Fortunately, Greta, 47, mobilized a small army of supporters, tapping into the network the couple built in the 3 years since they started @translifeline, a crisis hotline for #transgender individuals. Nina walked out 4 days after her arrival feeling "privileged to be able to get out so quickly, and in one piece,” she told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ. Others have not been so lucky. The question of how to protect transgender women in immigration detention has confounded federal authorities for some time. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
