Opioid addiction is America’s 50-state epidemic. It courses along Interstate highways in the form of cheap smuggled heroin, and flows out of “pill mill” clinics where pain medicine is handed out like candy. Public health officials have called it the worst drug crisis in American history; in 2015, it killed more than 33,000 people. At The Hills drug treatment center in Los Angeles, @kendrickbrinson photographed Jordan, 33, who asked that his last name not be disclosed. The Hills, which can cost around $50,000, serves a more privileged population, yet its mission is no less daunting. When Jordan spoke to a @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reporter, he was on his 118th day sober and his third stint in rehab. He has been collecting his sobriety chips along the way. Although he’d smoked pot, taken ecstasy and occasionally snorted cocaine in the past, heroin had once seemed off-limits to Jordan, the college-educated son of 2 therapists.
