Each summer, a flotilla of wooden skiffs sets off on a 5-day journey from the town of Sunbury-on-Thames in England. Mission: catch all the swans on the upper reaches of the River Thames. The crews check the parentage of young birds and mark them to claim their ownership. Some belong to the queen, others to 2 ancient trade guilds based in the City of London. It’s called “swan upping,” and in the days after the Brexit vote last year the @nytmag writer @emerillon became obsessed with the annual custom. “Brexit rhetoric was all about a battle to save English values and an English way of life,” she writes. Swan upping, in its antiquity, pageantry and evocation of deep English history, exemplifies these themes, @emerillon writes. She wanted to observe the centuries-old custom in the hopes of finding out what it means to call a country home. @immoklink photographed David Barber, the queen’s swan marker, taking a swan to land.
