New year, new commute. After nearly a century, the Second Avenue subway extension in Manhattan opened on Sunday — with excitement and complaints. The route is an extension of the Q line, which now runs from the Upper East Side in Manhattan to Coney Island in Brooklyn. After decades of aborted efforts to build the line, and at least 3 groundbreakings in the 1970s, construction on the current segment began in 2007 and was originally projected to open in 2013. On New Year’s Day, as mass transit mavens, subway aficionados and curious New Yorkers toured the new stations, the crowds were mesmerized by the artwork adorning the walls of each station. @michelleagins took this photo of one visitor, Alfee, posing with a piece by Chuck Close at the new 86th Street stop. Today, the subway reached another milestone: the first real morning commute. For many on the Upper East Side, it’s the first day of many shorter trips to work.
