Like many residents of Fiji, Pita Qarau used to eat #turtle, which is considered a delicacy in the South Pacific nation of more than 300 islands. Traditionally turtles were eaten at major events, like a wedding or a chief’s funeral. But about 20 years ago, #Fiji imposed a moratorium on harvesting them. The ban has been observed inconsistently, but some people have dedicated themselves to conservation. Pita — a native of Yadua, a small, remote island in Fiji’s north — is a volunteer participating in a program by the @world_wildlife that has helped replenish the turtle population after decades of decline. “The number of turtles were dropping and the size, you can’t see any big ones, only small,” the 53-year-old told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ. “That is why I change myself.” His skills for hunting turtles come in handy for tracking and protecting them from illegal harvesting. Counting turtles is best done at night when they sleep under the coral, Pita said, or during the day when they feed at high tide on a shallow reef. @lamyikfei took this photo while on #nytassignment in #Fiji.
