This is a photograph of the “Cosmic Microwave Mandala,” a sand mandala created by artist Rachel Sussman. Rachel weaves together principles of physics with the Tibetan Buddhist practice of creating sand mandalas to explore the nature of our universe. This brightly colored work represents the Cosmic Microwave Background: the earliest light in the universe, imprinted on the sky 380,000 years after the Big Bang. Because mandalas are destroyed after their creation, Rachel describes this as “ephemeral artwork about eternity.” •
Rachel is part of the TED Residency program, which invites people of all fields into TED’s NYC office to develop their ideas and work directly with the TED community. To learn how you can become a TED Resident, visit go.ted.com/tedresident
