“Words over time have a way of just oozing around,” says linguist John McWhorter. Their meanings can broaden and narrow, or change entirely. For instance, “meat” was first used to refer to all food, and “bird” was a term describing any baby animal. “A word we utter is usually just the latest stage in tens of millennia of drifting from one meaning into another,” John explains.
