These simple, modern homes make up the doctors’ housing complex at Butaro District Hospital in rural Rwanda. Architect Michael Murphy and his team at MASS Design Group used local materials and workers to create a one-of-a-kind hospital campus that tackles health challenges common in the subtropical African climate. He also wanted to push back against the idea that it’s acceptable to give medical professionals the bare minimum. “Doctors can’t work at their highest caliber while living in substandard housing,” says Michael.
