This little firefly is much more than meets the eye. These summertime bugs use an enzyme called luciferase to light up and find a mate. But firefly luciferase is a powerful tool for research too -- scientists are using the enzyme to test for salmonella in food, and to determine which drugs can most effectively zap tumor cells. “It goes to show just how much benefit we humans can derive from evolution’s natural inventiveness,” says biologist Sara Lewis.
