Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mountain hare yawning – I’ve been photographing mountain hares now for almost 15 years and I’ll never tire of spending time with these incredible mammals. The first site that I ever worked at was high in the Monadhliath mountains and it was an arduous 3-4 hour walk in. It was actually my mum, a serial Munro bagger (Munro is a name for Scottish mountains over 3000 feet high though this would be a hill in most other countries J), that first stumbled upon a high plateau that, 10-15 years ago, had what appeared to be hundreds of mountain hares on its slopes. For many years my uncle and I would make annual pilgrimages to Aviemore in Scotland to spend time high on the isolated hills working with these most confiding and trusting of mammals. Alas, there remains in our country a disturbed minority that still glean a sick pleasure from the slaughter of these innocents and even this remote site was inevitably discovered, its incredible inhabitants slaughtered, both indiscriminately and it seems permanently. I can think of few other types of people who disgust or enrage me more than those who can witness and experience such beauty, such value and such worth and in such a pristine wilderness, and then in one emotionless futile heartbeat, extinguish it. What I do know however is that we in the UK, and indeed any nation that allows ‘sport hunting’, can have little reason or right to object to the conduct of other nations, to Spain’s bullfighting, the Faroe Islands grindadrap, Japans’ Tajii, Canada’s seal clubbers or Africa’s trophy hunters, whilst we allow this medieval barbarity to continue on our own doorstep. The tide is turning, opinion is shifting but we must act fast, and together, to once and for all banish these depraved and senseless traditions to the history books, consigned to yet another dark chapter in the human story.
