Up and away.......the last of the annual Monarch migration lifted off from their stopover on the Sweet Briar College campus in Amherst, Virginia last week. Their incredible 2,000 mile flight will take them out over the Gulf of Mexico and up into the Oyamel forests of Michoacán, Mexico. They will spend the winter on these fir trees in tightly-clustered colonies which protects them from the freezing rains and occasional snow storms. The very existence of the Monarch migration is threatened due to illegal logging of the forests in Mexico and destruction and poisoning of their food sources in the U.S. @thephotosociety #natgeocreative #monarchmigration #endangeredspecies #IUCN
