Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety A red fox cub is transfixed as she watches insects/birds in the branches above. In the first few weeks that I spent with the fox cubs they frequently seemed fascinated by anything and everything. It was such a privilege to be able to watch them explore their new world, tentatively and inquisitively reacting to all of the new experiences that they had. Below the wood in which the fox earth was situated was a footpath and often times I could hear dog walkers wandering past, unaware of the little eyes that were watching, or the not so little ears that were listening. This little vixen almost seems to be smiling in this image, so transfixed is she in the insects buzzing in the branches just over her head. All in all I was able to spend 7 privileged weeks with this vixen and her six siblings and I was able to watch as all grew healthily toward independence. Life for foxes in the UK can be extremely challenging and fraught with danger and so it was with mixed emotions when sightings became more and more infrequent, their innate foxiness leading them to range further and further, seeking new territories for themselves. Much like the coyotes and wolves in the US there remains so much myth and misinformation peddled about these highly adaptable and resourceful predators and I long for a time when their presence is cherished, not only for their beauty but also for the enormous environmental benefit that apex predators have in the environments where they live.
