Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety A grizzly bear strides along a remote Alaskan beach – Images such as these can sometimes inadvertently create an inaccurate impression of the circumstances under which they were taken. This one as an example looks as though the bear is walking into a strong headwind, striding purposefully against the elements. To the best of my knowledge however I don’t remember it being windy at all and of all the images that I captured during this individual encounter this is the only one where it creates that specific impression. Of course, not only is my memory probably not what it used to be but I was also lying in about 8 inches of water at the time, just a few feet away from an adult male grizzly so noting the exact wind speed definitely wasn’t high on my list of things to do. That being said there is a quality to the image that appeals to me. It does feel very elemental, very wild and I particularly like little details such as the raised paw and the detail in the razor sharp claws. It also has a nice observational feel to it, largely due to the absence of any eye contact, or even any acknowledgement of my presence, such it seems is the intent with which the bear is fixed. What actually happened immediately after this image was captured is that the bear stopped a few feet further on and decided to do a bit of clamming, digging in the sand to unearth the high protein delicacy for which they have such a taste. Being so close to these often misreported apex predators is a tremendous privilege and their ecological importance could never be overstated. It will forever bewilder and enrage me in the 21st century there remains a despicable minority that still get their sick thrill from the mindless slaughter of these astonishing icons, these innocents, all to try and compensate for some pathetic inadequacy in their own lives. That this remains legal in advanced Western democracies is an embarrassment and future generations will judge our impotence and our apathy appropriately.
