Photo: @jim_sugar |While travelling to Seattle last week to attend the Adobe Video World conference, the Southwest plane flew above the subduction zone that separates the Pacific tectonic plate from the North American plate. As the plane began its descent, Mt. St. Helen’s volcano became visible just beyond the right wing of the plane. On May 18, 1980, the volcano erupted and blew out both the top and the north face of the mountain. Since I was shooting an assignment for National Geographic at the time, I made numerous visits to Mt. St. Helens. Seeing the volcano from 30,000 feet the other day was like revisiting an old friend. Wounded, but beautiful, and still very much alive. Once the volcano cooled off and stopped smoking, Geographic writer Rowe Findley and I landed inside the crater in a helicopter and shared a rhubarb pie and a bottle of champagne. Because we could. A day to remember forever. This freeze frame is part of a video shot with a Lumix GX-85 camera. @thephotosociety @natgeocreative #Mt. St. Helens #the Cascade Volcanoes.
