El Pampero — the state-run psychiatric hospital in Barquisimeto, Venezuela — has long been a forgotten place, filled with forgotten people. Patients have been abandoned by their families. “May God have mercy on us,” the head nurse told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ journalists who visited the hospital at the invitation of doctors. The medical staff at El Pampero are aghast at what is taking place. The glue that keeps this hospital in order — the sedatives, tranquilizers and medications — is nearly all gone. Many patients in the women’s ward wear only T-shirts, and few have shoes. Nurses make belts out of surgical gloves and pieces of rope to keep patients’ pants from sliding off their slight frames. This #nytweekender, we have been sharing photos by @meridithkohut, who visited the hospital with the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reporter @caseysalbum. While shooting, @meridithkohut said, she had to wipe tears from the back of her camera.
