The state-run psychiatric hospital in Barquisimeto, #Venezuela has long been a forgotten place, filled with forgotten people. But with the country suffering from a severe economic crisis, El Pampero Hospital hasn’t employed a psychiatrist in 2 years. It has almost no drugs to control the afflictions tormenting its patients. And medical records show that over half of the patients in the men’s ward are underweight, like Omar Mendoza, pictured here. He lost half his weight this summer and is down to about 75 pounds. The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reporter @caseysalbum visited El Pampero with the photographer @meridithkohut, who took this picture of Omar. During their visit, the 2 learned that the hospital has running water for only a few hours a day, and food is scarce. There’s no soap, no shampoo, no toothpaste, no toilet paper. Patients relieve themselves in the common areas and patio area, and clean themselves only with water. Clothes, too, are in short supply. Follow @meridithkohut for more photos. #nytweekender
