Saddened by the passing of former Israeli President Shimon Peres.

Mr Peres was the last of the founding generation of Israeli leaders, a visionary who served his country all his life. I last called on him in April, at the Peres Centre of Peace in Tel Aviv. He received me graciously. Then 92, he was focussed on the young and the future. He told me why he was convinced that science and education were the way to foster greater understanding between peoples.
