On July 11, 1995, near the end of the Bosnian War, the city of Srebrenica in Bosnia and Herzegovina fell to Bosnian Serb forces. #Srebrenica, which had been designated a safe area by the @unitednations, was being protected by Dutch troops at the time. On the evening of July 11, more than 20,000 residents sought refuge in and around the Dutch military compound in a former factory about 3 miles away. The next morning, Bosnian Serb forces separated the men and boys from the rest of the group. More than 8,000 men and boys, most of them Muslim, were massacred. Yesterday, while on #nytassignment, the photographer Andrew Testa attended a ceremony marking the 21st anniversary of the worst mass killing in Europe since World War II. He took this photo of relatives mourning by the coffins of 127 newly discovered victims, who were later buried in individual graves at the Srebrenica-Potocari Memorial Center and Cemetery.
