A new global march of refugees is fleeing not war or persecution, but #climatechange. The Uru-Murato people were known to nearly everyone near Llapallapani, #Bolivia, as “the people of the lake.” For generations, they lived off the waters of #LakePoop, but in December, the lake basically disappeared — increasing temperatures had evaporated what little water was left after decades of water diversion and cyclical El Niño droughts. “The lake was our mother and our father,” one local fisherman told @caseysalbum, the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ Andes bureau chief. “Without this lake, where do we go?” The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer @joshhaner took this photo of Daisy Quispe Conaviri, 6, holding a cat outside her home. Follow along this #nytweekender to see more of @joshhaner’s photos from Bolivia.
