The Polish artists Ventzislav, right, and Katarzyna Piriankov sat in front of murals they painted of Indira Gandhi and Fidel Castro in Staro Zhelezare, Bulgaria. With a population of 400, Staro Zhelezare is like so many other Eastern European hamlets withering in the face of low birthrates and the exodus of young adults to more prosperous points west. Except for the murals. The idea, Ventzislav told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reporter @ricklyman, “was to use the village as our canvas and to transform it into a work of art.” Already featured on whitewashed walls are Che Guevara and Brigitte Bardot. Murals of Gandhi, Lincoln and Cleopatra will join the ranks this summer as a rotating group of students visit Staro Zhelezare and help build what the artists call their “Village of Personalities.” @kostyukov took this photo while on #nytassignment in #Bulgaria.
