Rami Malek knew nothing about #hacker culture before he began working on #MrRobot, a techno-thriller that arrived last summer on USA Network as a grim, haunted curiosity. By embracing current concerns, like the loss of privacy amid the tyranny of smartphones and social media, @whoismrrobot became one of the most acclaimed TV shows of 2015. Rami, 35, plays a gifted but mentally unstable hacker with social anxiety and a morphine addiction. In real life, the actor — who is of Egyptian descent, like the show’s creator, @samesmail — finds social media phony. On the screen, though, on an urgently modern show, Rami is an urgently modern leading man. “5 or 10 years ago, I would have never been considered for the lead of a show,” he told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ. He embodies a time when TV is finally starting to reflect the diversity and multiculturalism that define American life. @philipmontgomery photographed #RamiMalek at @newyorkpalace.
