Blake Pennington rode out to wrangle cattle on Bill Gray’s ranch, outside Ordway, Colorado. For centuries, well-trained cattlemen have gathered once a year for a day of dragging and branding newborn animals. Afterward, there is cheap beer and a meal, maybe a band and a dance. But time has changed much in the American West. On some ranches, cowboys round up cattle on 4-wheelers and track livestock with drones. In this upheaval, the cattle branding process, which has been criticized as cruel, has also come under threat. @nickcotephoto took this photo while on #nytassignment in Colorado.
