This 2-year-old boy arrived in Toronto in February with his parents, Muaz and Sawsan Ballani, who fled Syria shortly after they were married a few years ago. Since their marriage, the couple had been languishing in Jordan, sleeping in a house crammed with too many people and ants that crawled all over their son, nicknamed Aboudi. Across Canada, ordinary citizens are intervening in one of the most pressing problems on earth. Their country allows them a power and responsibility rare in the world: They can band together in small groups and personally resettle — essentially adopt — a refugee family. The Ballanis’ sponsors found them an apartment and covered it with tags labeling everything in English. When Aboudi threw tantrums in daycare, they sat with him so his mother could stay in language class. @damonwinter photographed Aboudi with David Scrivener, Jr., whose parents sponsored the Ballani family.
