“Live free always.” Sam and Ellen Freeman live in Gerton, North Carolina, in a roadside shack built by Sam’s mom 100 years ago. Their home has a dirt floor and no running water. Sam and Ellen have no means of income or health care and survive largely on the goodwill of neighbors. To buy groceries and beer, Ellen walks 4 miles over a mountain to the nearest store. The Freemans are among the Americans that @ianbrownphotography has documented for a series exploring the concept of the #AmericanDream. “Inevitably, stories of their future hopes included stories of their disappointments and misfortunes,” @ianbrownphotography writes in the #nytopinion section.
