A foul smell hangs in the air over White Island, a marine volcano in New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty, and steam hisses from rocks stained bright yellow from centuries of sulfur exposure. According to Maori lore, the volcano — located only 30 miles offshore from the small coastal town of Whakatane — has smoked continuously for centuries, and Captain James Cook observed it in 1769 during his first voyage in the Pacific. But the island's history is a side note for most visitors, who visit to trek between steam vents and bubbling mud pools. Or as Linda Jameson from Cavan, Ireland, told @nytimestravel, “It’s like I’m on Mars!” @lottiehedleyphoto captured this scene while on #nytassignment on #WhiteIsland. #?
