Get thee to the beach! In 1948, a @ニューヨーク・タイムズ photographer captured a crowd at Times Square boarding a train on the Sea Beach Line. The same year — but not the same day this photo was taken — @ニューヨーク・タイムズ ran a story about a very hot week in August. If you’re feeling a little overheated on this summer day, consider this: On August 27, 1948, business and public employees in New York City were sent home from work early as a result of the heat. Crowds flocked to Coney Island (750,000 people), the Rockaways (900,000 people) and other beaches in the area. “Thousands slept on the beaches unmolested by the police and park department employees,” @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reported. Other notable events that took place on that hot summer day: 7 snakes in the reptile house at the @bronxzoo died before 10-pound cakes of ice were placed in the cages, and a representative of a the Allboro Retail Fruit Dealers Associated, meanwhile, “urged that housewives shop for fruits and vegetables in the early morning hours.” #tbt
