The Uru-Murato people, an indigenous group in #Llapallapani, Bolivia, survived the conquests of the Inca and the Spanish, but seem unable to adjust to the abrupt upheaval #climatechange has caused. They lived off the waters of Lake Poopó, once Bolivia’s second-largest, for generations, but in December, the lake basically disappeared. Only 636 Uru-Murato are estimated to remain in Llapallapani and 2 nearby villages. Scores have left to work in lead mines or salt flats up to 200 miles away; those who stayed behind scrape by as farmers or survive on what used to be the shore. The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer @joshhaner took this photo of workers in Llapallapani’s quinoa fields, while on #nytassignment with @caseysalbum, the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ Andes bureau chief.
