For the Uru-Murato people, flamingos were like a pharmacy: In addition to the pink fat used to alleviate arthritis, the feathers fought fevers when burned and inhaled. But when climate change caused #LakePoop in #Llapallapani, Bolivia, to dry up, the birds that had fed on the fish had little choice but to abandon what was once Bolivia’s second-largest lake. “We took so many of these from the lake,” said Emilio Huanaco, an indigenous judicial official, as he pulled out a bright pink #flamingo wing from the mud hut behind his home. The day 7 years ago that he hunted the bird down, Emilio had no idea it would be his last. Since the flamingos took flight, many of the Uru-Murato people left as well, joining a new global march of refugees fleeing not war or persecution, but #climatechange. The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer @joshhaner took this photo in #Bolivia, while on #nytassignment with @caseysalbum, the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ Andes bureau chief. Follow along this #nytweekender to see more photos exploring how climate change is displacing the Uru-Murato people.
