Police officers arrest more than 1.2 million people a year in the U.S. on charges of illegal drug possession. Field tests help them move quickly from suspicion to conviction. But the kits — which cost about $2 each and have changed little since 1973 — are far from reliable. Amy Albritton, left, was charged with felony drug possession when Houston police officers used such a test to analyze a “white chunk substance” — which totaled 0.0134 grams, about the same as a tiny pinch of salt — spotted on the floor of her car. 6 months later, lab testing identified no controlled substance. It was not a drug. It did not contain anything mixed with drugs. It was a crumb — food debris, perhaps. Amy was innocent. But by then, it was too late: She pleaded guilty, served 21 days of her 45-day sentence and returned home a felon. @heislerphoto captured this moment between Amy and Landon, Amy’s 16-year-old son who has been disabled from birth by cerebral palsy, at their home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
