In 2015, some 800,000 people crossed the Mediterranean to Greece, many fleeing wars in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. But there’s another humanitarian crisis in Europe that many people have heard much less about: the roughly 200,000 migrants and refugees who have left Africa for Italy since last year. @ashgilbertson of @viiphoto spent a week in Sicily last month with @unicef, taking photos and interviewing some of those who’ve made the journey. Lovette, a 16-year-old from Nigeria, who is pictured here, was imprisoned in Libya for not having papers. She was beaten and fed only 3 days a week, she said. Later she joined 90 other people on a crowded boat. After 4 hours the engine stopped, and the boat drifted for hours before the passengers were rescued. Lovette wants to stay in Italy, go to school and open a salon. Visit the link in our profile to see more photos by @ashgilberston.
